Smoky Senior Citizens' Centre
|
|
Audio : Listen
Edit:
IMPORTANT!! This post is NOT against the elderly, not because I don't understand them and not because I don't respect them!!
I am posting this out of concern for the 'non-smoking' elder folks who might not be benefitting from the facilities because they are avoiding the place due to the smoky smells.
AND, I have personally heard from other elder folks at the playground that they are avoiding the place just because of this reason! Do you have a Senior Citizens' Centre just below your block of flats or around your neighbourhood?
In some estates, these are called Senior Citizen Corners. These centres/corners are created for elderly folks to get together for a game of chess, chit-chat, a cup of tea or just sitting around to while away the time. There is a Senior Citizen Centre just below the block of flats I live in and everyday, there are a number of elderly people hanging around there. They will usually have a few rounds of mahjong or card games there. As the estate is a new one, the centre doubles up as a temporary Residents' Committee (RC) centre as well.
As many flat-dwellers in Singapore should know, the RC organizes outings to farms, educational programmes for kids, community development events, etc., within a neighbourhood zone. For these activities, you will have to purchase tickets. Now, this is the thing I hate most... having to go to the Senior Citizens' Centre to buy the tickets.
Why do I hate this? The horrible cigarette smoke smell that the centre is full of!! There is this stale, sourish smell of cigarette smoke that seems to be dead-stucked to the centre. Not only that, if you were to take a walk pass the centre, you will definitely catch a whiff of the same smokey smell! Aargghh!! Yuck!!!
Now, before anyone goes flaming me for disrepect or snobbish behaviour, I would like to make it clear that I am absolutely in support of the idea of having a Senior Citizens' corner! And I do respect the elderly! The thing is that the stench is just too strong to just shrug it off - especially if you have to smell it every morning! Duh!
While on leave recently, I noticed that many of the elderly folks smoked in the centre. Ok, fine. They are smokers, I am not, and I will never understand the need for a fag when it comes... but the centre is not opened the whole day! And in the morning or night when the doors are closed, the smoke gets trapped in the centre and when left overnight... phew!!! The smell is horrible! I wonder how those elderly folks who do not smoke managed to stay in the centre at all!?!? Or do they even go there at all?!?

5050 is sick

Audio : Listen
5050's sick. He needs new specs and more... Sent 5050 to the hospital... the diagnosis? It's sick and needs a new pair of spectacles.
5050's had it tough. Went through shitty weather with me, sweaty times with me and a little bit of careless, rough handling by me too. Now it has taken ill... not fun liao! :(
Noticed this freaky whitish patch on the lens the other day... immediately I knew it was fungus. Fuck! So, while on leave last week, I sent it to the service centre for an evaluation... results came back with a recommendation for a replacement lens. This is going to set me back SGD190.00!!! And 5050's going to have to 'hospitalized' for at least 2 weeks! Aarrggghhhh! Curse the humidity!!!
I have decided to send it in only after the Chinese New Year. At least I have something to take pictures with during the new year.
When that time comes, anyone with a free Fujifilm F11 to borrow or give perhaps? Or maybe a spare Finepix 5600 somewhere??? Heehee!

The past 5 days
|
|
Audio : Listen
Back from the loooong weekend! I managed to get a lot of things done during the past 5 days!
We did these:- 22nd Dec
Lucas' birthday today! Brought the family out. Decided to talk a walk (shop) around Orchard Road so that Mummy can get her new year clothing while the kids can see their favourite toys! We bought a cake to ??'s house for Lucas' birthday - it tasted much better than the Log Cake from Four Leavesanother place.
- 23rd Dec
It's PAINT-THE-ROOMS day! We painted the kids' rooms today. Nice childish colours to add more life!
- 24th Dec
Christmas Eve... nothing planned. Janet's aching all over because of the painting work yesterday. Had dinner with my parents at Swensen's. Long queue, but no choice.
Went for Christmas Eve/Day midnight mass at St. Vincent de Paul's church...it's been a long time since I stepped there. Reason? It's a long story... let's just say I had an unpleasant experience with some blokes there.
- 25th Dec
Christmas DayRe-arrange the storeroom day. Janet and I took apart the shelf in the storeroom and 're-configured' the levels. Cut and bruised our fingers in the process, but we were very satisfied with the completed layout. Fantastic! (Only homemakers will understand) Haha!
- 26th Dec
Boxing Day What the fuck is 'Boxing Day' anyway? Don't give a damn about that! Hah!
Went down to Hong Lim Complex to get my digital photos printed. Did not have KT Digital Imaging's numbers on hand so just went and tried my luck. When I approached the shop, my heart sank as I noticed the shutters were down. Shit! What shit luck I had! So, I made my way back to Chinatown Point to meet Janet and we decided for food at Telok Ayer Food Centre. Walking towards the shop again, I noticed that this time, the shutters were up!!! Hahah! Saw Lily in the shop and was told that they were closed on Sundays and Public Holidays, BUT she will print them for me anyway... hahah! :)
Singing their hearts out. Had lunch at the food centre and decided to take a short walk around Chinatown area... it was CROWDED! We saw two men singing their hearts out at the 'flea market' just below the food centre... I wanna grow old and be as free as they are!
The Chinese New Year mood is already in the air! We decided before long that we've had enough of the place and headed for Dhoby Ghaut. It was not much quieter as well! Seems like everybody's out shopping! Kekeke!

Painting the royal rooms
|
|
Audio : Listen
Queen Valerie de Poko's Painted the house kids' rooms yesterday. Janet and I decided that it was time to give their rooms a fresh coat, and at the same time, add more colours to them.
Prince Lucas Pipipom Pipi's We did not really paint the 'room' but rather two walls in each room. We used three colours in all. Tones of pink, green and blue Dulux paint were used. The painting part was not too tough but the amount of stuff we had to move away to paint the walls was the killer. Ha!
Luckily, Janet's mum came by and helped ease the work a little. We started at around 0900hrs and ended about 1800hrs. Not too bad... went out for dinner at 'Taste of Thailand' at Sembawang Shopping Centre before coming home to clean up the ends. Finished EVERYTHING at around 0100hrs this morning. Phew!! :-)

Breaking from the routines

Yes, a break is what I need. A break from all the work I face in the office. A break from the daily routines. A change even for a few days. And a break I shall have!!! Hehehe!
I will finally go on my 'long' leave starting tomorrow and will be back to work only on the 27th of December. Hahahah! That's a freaking 5 days off work!!!
Although I have a number of things to do during this break, it is still a break from my routine. The things I have planned to be done during this break include, painting the kids' rooms, bringing the family out for a good meal, and maybe to start installing and playing a game or two on my PC.

Playing with light...

Play with light. Q: What do you do when you are in a tent with nothing better to do?
A: You buy light sticks at SGD1.00 for 4 sticks and start playing and taking pictures with them in the tent!
Haha! This is exactly what we did on Saturday night... my SGD2.00 was well-spent indeed. Everyone got their light sticks to play with! If only organizations were run with the same high level of good 'corporate governance'... haiz...

Camping at East Coast Park

The camp site The family stayed overnight at East Coast Park (near Bedok Jetty) on Saturday. It was a very interesting experience for the kids who have never stayed overnight outdoors before. KH brought along two tents, one for our family and one for his. Camp was set up amongst some Casuarina trees and Lucas was very concerned about the 'pokey-pokey' ground... haha! He refused to walk around barefooted because of the dried and hard fruits of the Casuarina tree!
After pitching the tents, the kids enjoyed themselves playing on the beach. Janet and I spent the time catching crabs on the breakwater and attempting to catch (with no luck at all) mud skippers!
The afternoon thunderstorm came as a surprise after the hot weather all morning. We were caught by the downpour but luckily our bags were already safe in the shelter of the tents.
Dinner was taken at the nearby food centre. There was a street-performer singing his heart out and really taking away our appetite at the same time. The loomy sky continued to 'threaten' our stay but luckily the sky cleared at around 2 a.m., and the moon can finally be seen...

GAME BOY whatever

GAME BOY micro Nano is in. Micro is in too.
Just bought a GAME BOY from Sim Lim Square yesterday. Alas, it was not the new GAME BOY micro (GBM) but the older GAME BOY Advance SP (GBASP).
This is supposed to be a birthday gift for Lucas from his grandmother and boy was he happy when he saw the set! I was given the task of buying the set for him as the only 'game' that my mum knew and understood is 'mahjong'. Nintendos and PSPs are foreign to her.
I was very much tempted to buy the GBM but the MINUTE screen size really put off that idea. Yes, the screen is WAY brighter than the GBASP but its size killed it.
RPG games with conversations and text-heavy games will make you squint your eyes so much just to read the text that you might just as well buy magnifiers to play them! This definitely is not meant for kids! Playing with handhelds is already not an eye-friendly hobby, and with such a small screen, it just makes things worse!GAME BOY Advance SP
While the screen size is the major problem with the GBM (for me at least!), its overall design is a winner. Shaped almost like mobile phones, it has a solid, metallic feel and the lighted START and SELECT buttons definitely adds the icing to the cake!
Another good design feature is SKINs. You can buy skins/covers/housing/whatever-you-call-them for your GBM just like you would for your mobile phone... on release day, there were about less than 10 designs to choose from, but with time, there should be a lot more coming.
If I had the extra SGD200.00 to spare right now... hmm.... Christmas present for me, anyone?!?!? The black one is cool. :)

Exams, books and more

Finally, the term exams are over for me. A big load of shit it was! Ha!! When I finished the paper last night, I could not wait to leave the exam hall. It was a nice, almost euphoric, feeling to step out of the campus after the paper. Now, it's wait, wait, wait for the results.
Still on the topic of education...
We bought Valerie's school books for next year via the Internet again this time round. I feel this is way better than years ago when parents had to go to school to lug the books home. (Of course, those who choose to may still buy the books from the school on specific days!)
No more queueing up at the school canteen and fighting other parents to get the books before they 'run out of stock' for the day. The bookstore that processes the online orders will have the book order sent right to your doorstep. At an additional 'shipping' fee of about SGD5.00, this is definitely worth the money - considering the amount of squeezing, queueing and sweating you do not have to go through.
The process of ordering is simple too!
- Visit the site and create a login account FREE.
- Select your child's level (Primary 3, Primary 4, etc.) and select the school he/she is studying in. A COMPLETE list of all available items (EXACTLY the same as the list issued by the school) will be displayed.
- Select the books that you want/don't want and the quantity required.
- Submit and double check order list before confirming.
That's all! You can expect delivery to be usually about a week or so from the date of order. A thing to note would be that most of these sites only accept credit/debit cards for payment. Cashcards are generally not widely accepted (yet!?!?) for online payments.
So, in about 3 days time, Valerie will have to start going through the new books... I will also have to start writing her name as well as putting on the covers for the books.
The year's coming to an end and so are the holidays... a new year is a welcoming change indeed.

Not only has it been reborn, it has started spreading like nobody's business!!! Haha! You can hear it all over the place! Starting from pasar malams to shopping centres (courtesy of the movie Chicken Little)! Many versions of the song are available... the original version by O-zone, there's one by Crazy Frog, another by local singer Guo Mei Mei, and many many more in different languages!!!
Wah liew!!! Now my kids are also on to this craze... Valerie's getting her head swinging and body shaking whenever she hears this song, Lucas has been pretty funny too whenever he hears this... dancing like the chick in Chicken Little's entrance clip asking patrons to switch off their mobile phones.
Even when I close my eyes to sleep, I can hear the song ringing in my head!!! Aarrgghh!!! Duh!

Recently, a couple of my friends have received 'friendly' verbal warnings from their bosses with regards to blogging about work. Seems like a lot of people are getting such notices from their companies. Companies are not too receptive to the fact that (some) employees blog about their work places and companies, usually as a form of de-stress for a lot of them.
Hmm... anyway, I have also decided (for my own good and the good of my paycheck) to stop posting about work in the company itself... rather, if I really have to, I will only talk blog about working life in general.
In case you were wondering... I have not received any form of warning, advice, notices, etc. from my company. Hehehe!

Had lunch today at the newly opened (re-opened?!?) Market and Food Centre in Lorong Ah Soo. Food was ok only, with not much variety to choose from as quite a number of stalls were either closed for the day (at 1400hrs) or were not ready to open for business yet.
Had a bowl of not-so-tasty Yong Tou Foo and topped it off with some deep fried fritters dipped in coffee. That about filled my stomach to the brim! Haha! How to work like that!?!? Feeling half sleepy already! Besides, I am still feeling the effects of the Valium that was prescribed for my insomnia. Duh!
Now, I have come to the stage where I require medication to fall asleep. This is bad, but... what the heow!?! ZZZZzzzzz.......

Man slicing the outer skins off bread outside bakery I was having duck rice at 琪利 along Paya Lebar Road, when I decided to buy some roti. The bakery is just beside the coffeeshop where 琪利 is. Too bad I did not get the name of the shop.
What I like about the bread here is that it is 'traditionally' baked and prepared - not much automation (think Gardenia/Sunshine). The only machine as far as I can see is the one used to slice the bread. I guess with a big order to fulfill, technology still comes in helpful most of the time! Besides this, most of the preparation of the loaves of bread is manually handled. For example, the hard and crispy outer covering of the freshly baked bread is manually sliced off by means of a long knife.
From my understanding, the bread has to be allowed to cool down for a specific period of time before the outer 'skins' can be sliced off and the 'skins' are sold at a 'per kilogram' cost - though I did not find out exactly how much.
The bread (half-loaf) costs SGD1.10 plain or SGD2.00 if you request for butter, jam, peanut butter, kaya, etc. to be applied to the slices.

Bye bye Bachelorhood for Mr. Han!

Audio : Listen
So, it's BYE BYE BACHELORHOOD for Han! Let me count the number of days before Han leaves 'bachelorhood'...hmm...excluding today, which is almost gone already... *gasp!* Five Freaking Days!!! Kekeke!! This is it man, there's no turning back!!!
Many people (women as well) tell me that to get married is like cutting short their years of freedom and enjoyment. It's like cutting short the number of 'zouk-going' years, time at the pubs/clubs, etc. Some men liken the 'experience' to digging their own graves, others accept it as the ultimate loss of their adult life. This is highly debatable and I will not want to go too far into that! (I don't like flame-wars!)
For me, I have come to know that marriage is not just a commitment, but it is the NEXT PHASE in life. The question is whether or not you want to make the leap to that next phase. To a certain extend, I have to agree that marriage does cut into that lifestyle. This is especially so when kids come into the picture.
Whenever someone asks me about married life and how to better understand and accept it, I usually tell them to ask themselves these questions:
- Why did you decide to get married?
Peer pressure, family pressure, just a procedure since you've been together for a long time, etc.
- How much about each other's WANTS and DON'T WANTS do you understand?
e.g. Does he/she know that you do not really like hanging out with the others at the pub, and that you going there in the first place was to get to know her?!?!? Does she like your soccer mates?!? Do you mind his/her spending habits?
- Do you want kids immediately?
If so, then you should have considered the FACT that you will not have EXTRA TIME to go pubbing/clubbing.
- "A family that eats together stays together". How far do you agree with this?
If you don't, then there will be not much time for family bonding and building among the members (you, her, and maybe your children). No, shopping with mummy on Saturday hardly gives time for that sort of things.
In attempting to answer these questions, I hope that they will better understand their choice of marriage, and in turn be in a better state of mind when handling the little nits and bits that married life brings.
If you are wondering, NO, I am not a shrink and I am not even a marriage consultant. I am just someone who has spent too much time wondering. These thoughts may not be agreeable by all but I do not intend to get into a serious debate over what's right or wrong with this post.
Last but not least,CONGRATULATIONS TO MR AND MRS. HAN!! May you lead an enjoyable life after marriage, and may the patter of little feet soon sound in the house!

Sorry if you have received multiple email updates for this post. Somehow, my Greasemonkey scripts got screwed and totally messed up the post date details.
No, I haven't run out of topics to post - YET! It's just that since we areI am still on the topic of photography, and the nonsense that I shoot, I might as well put up one post dedicated to these "rubbish"! The pictures date way back to 2003 when I was still using my Fujifilm FP4800Z (if I remember the model correctly) digital camera.
So, here it goes!
Pot-bellied pigs not bothered by me. At the zoo: I take the kids to the zoo frequently. Up till the early half of this year, we are still members of the Friends of the Zoo (FOZ) club. We used to visit the zoo at a minimum of four times a year! I.R. Baboon Naturally, the kids are thrilled to see the animals going about their daily, monotonous routines. It wasn't long before I discovered the interesting looks of the animals in the zoo. Actually, monkeys and baboons make interesting subjects. The are usually curious of the camera man too!
Flying UFOs Mural? At Chinatown: My 'exploits' do not end in the zoo. During the pre-Chinese New Year period, I will also get a lot of opportunities to go shutter-trigger-happy.
Most years, we will make a 'pilgrimage' trip to Chinatown to get (or not) some stuff for the festive season. This includes some decorations and seasonal cakes/pastries/puffs/etc. These are all opportunities that I will not miss!
Love Potion? Poser! Not forgetting the religious side In the house: Whenever the kids give me the slip, I will 'focus' on other items instead for shoots. I like figurines a lot as they are usually highly posable! Best of all, no complaints and moans!
These guys just stay there the whole time and all you got to do is just take pictures! :) Btw, some of my friends told me that the alter picture looks eerie. Does it really?
Sweating Cans in Bangkok Overseas: Of course, we should always take out talents overseas! Yah, I don't even let off the rooftops of temples in Bangkok! Haha!Rooftops!?!?
On the last trip to Bangkok, I had a good time shooting in Chatuchak Weekend market as well as the many temples around the city. The people of Thailand were generally friendly and comes across as easy victimssubjects.Train Station
However, I am still not too confident of street-shooting. Guess I will have to spend more time on this 'skill'... hahah! Poor innocent people!!!
Ok lah, enough bitching and whoring already! Time to stop this post here before I kena complain! Heheh!

We vistied Sitex 2005 at the Singapore Expo today. The guys were there to check out the latest prices and promotions on cameras (disappointment!) and Internet access packages.
The Mac Mini beckons... For me, I was just tagging along. Not planning to spend moolah on any item right now. Anyway, the exhibits there were pretty disappointing on the whole.
Not much SPECIAL promotions/packages that were going on. The sales people were not showing much interest in entertaining customers too! Maybe it is because this is a weekday, but, we had to take a while to find parking for the car! There was definitely a crowd there! Hmm...
I was checking out the Mac Mini as a possible setup for Valerie's room and was introduced to the Power Mac G5 by the sales person (a guy hor!). The whole setup for the Mac Mini 1.42GHz (80GB SuperDrive) option will set me back SGD1230.00 while the *slurp slurp!* Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3GHz will cost me SGD4588.00!!Power Mac G5 Seduction...

5 Commandments for Bloggers
|
|
Surfing By : Link
Audio : Listen
A good read for bloggers provided by Asst. Prof Warren B Chik (Singapore Management University). The article (titled, "Bloggers Beware: The Five Commandments for Bloggers") provides information on what people should be looking out for when posting their comments and thoughts online.
Excerpt:Most personal users have some vague idea of the netiquettes involved, but it is clear that a majority are unaware or unconcerned with the possible legalities which might be involved in what they are doing. This is because individual internet users are perhaps emboldened by what appears to be less legal and regulatory control and enforcement of online activities. They are also perhaps more uninhibited due to a sense of anonymity, such as through the use of pseudonyms and false identities. This has led to increased risk-taking in the forms of unadulterated speech and expression that are appearing in blogs and other online fora. However, recent events have shown that real world consequences still follow words or actions taken in cyberspace. It is therefore useful to spend a little time considering the various legal implications which may arise from blogging so that one can be aware and take care in starting and maintaining a blog, and avoid any nasty surprises along the way. Many of these legal issues are not new and are already applicable to any medium, traditional or electronic, which allows public access. Read it up. These are just basic legal questions but knowing them will do you a lot of good. :)

Monday at the office - quiet and moody. The roads were quieter this morning. There were lesser cars on the roads this morning. The buses were not as packed as they usually are. It's the school holidays again! The kids are off the roads and the working parents are not all rushing out early in the morning to send their kids to school. So, the traffic conditions were very much better.
I drank some coffee this morning and I think the Coffee-mate made me nauseous all the way from home to office. I guess my Nescafe Gold Blend tasted better without it.

Girls nowadays are not frail and helpless. They fight for their rights and earn their keep in the corporate world. They make sure that they get their voices heard on issues that were once 'men-only' territory, and even in the government! To add one to the growing list - they WILL NOT just stand there and let their modesty be violated!
That's right! Stephy Chua is a good example when she punched a dirty-old-man in the stomach (should have kicked him in the balls as well!) after she caught him taking upskirt pictures of her. Way to go girl!!! Woohoo! Now that should serve as a warning to all DOM and others as well, who have this 'hobby'.
Stephy's encounter reminded me of the many dirty old men I see around People's Park area in the afternoon. When my office was still located in Raffles Place, I used to roam to Chinatown for lunch with a group of my colleagues. Walking around the PPC area, you will see men in groups of threes or fours sitting and ogling the office ladies, PRCs, actually, any girl that walks past. Haha, must have been quite an experience for any lady walking there in spahetti strapped tops, tubes, and other sexy clothing.
Stephy's taken down her post of this incident for some reasons... link is not working now.

I have won the World Cup!! Erm, or so it seems...hurhur! Got the chance to hold the replica of the cup during Tuesday's staff meeting. That thing is darn heavy man! Surprised that it weighed so, considering that it is a replica.
Thanks to Marc for taking the picture for me! :-)
Oh... and do forgive the worn-out 'old man' look I have! heheh! Hmm... time for a hair cupcut!

Last night, we had the quarterly (is it?!?) staff meeting. As our parent company is one of the supporters and technology enablers of the FIFA World Cup 2006 event, we had the chance to come up close and 'very' personal with the World Cup trophy (a replica, but feels awesome AND heavy nonetheless!). Of course, I did not pass up a chance to get a picture taken with it! Now, if Marc would be so kind as to send me the picture...
If you haven't noticed already, the World Cup will be held in Germany. Going through the presentation slides, we were shown the pictures and some interesting information of one of the match locations - the Allianz Arena. It is an interesting location which was nicely designed - not only because Allianz used to be my parent company, but because it really is nice. Honestly!!
The Allianz Arena lighted up in Blue, White and Red colours.

A Weekend at Sentosa

Surfing By : Link
Audio : Listen
The family spent a nice, and somewhat semi-wet, weekend at Sentosa - courtesy of Lisa. I will not touch too much on the accommodation part but all I can say is that it was a little *ahem* cramped for some pretty obvious reasons. Little Chu Hui, who has been looking forward to this trip, was happy to be away with us. We arrived on Friday evening and spent a rather 'peaceful' evening in the hotel room, with the others busy pampering the kids with attention and loads of TLC. The kids were the main and only 'attraction' for the whole group that night.
Brave Valerie ascending the ladder. Saturday morning saw a lazy sun rising a little unwillingly. We woke up at around six in the morning and left for a stroll on the beach by about seven. I saw with dismay some dark clouds threathening to wet the day. It did rain but luckily the weather cleared up enough for the kids to go have some fun in the pool.
After the swim and cleaning up, I suggested going down to Delifrance for a sandwich. Lisa, Janet and I went down first. Valerie, Lucas and Wendy joined a while later, after mummy decided that it was a stupid idea to while away the time in the hotel room. Hahah! She watches how it's done. So, very unwillingly, the kids were called downstairs to meet us. After our chomp, we proceeded to the beach for a walk.
From the TV programmes, we remembered that there is a trapeze setup where people can get a chance for a swing for a price. It turned out to cost only SGD5.00 for one swing and a special price of SGD12.00 for a 'package' of 3 swings. Valerie, being the adventurous girl she is, opted for the triple swing. After paying for the tickets, it's off to the act!!!Getting strapped up. Safety first! Before you are allowed to proceed to the actual swing, you will have to go take a practice swing to learn how you should hook your legs on the swing bar. Then, it's off to the real thing!
Climbing up a ladder the height of about 5 storeys high, you will reach a platform where you will perform your 'stunt'. The person in charge will strap you in securely and get your ready for the swing by giving you a few other safety instructions. When all has been said and done, it's time for the swing.
As Valerie was still a kid, she could not reach out enough to hold on to the swing bars. So, the lady had to hoist her up and get her to hold on to the bar before giving her a light push on the bum to swing her off.And she succeeds!
The main idea is to swing out, raise both your legs, hook them to the bar, release your hands and support yourself with your bent legs. Simple! (Or so it seems!) We are proud of Valerie as she succeeded in all 3 swings to complete her stunts. On her last swing, the person in charge was so confident of Valerie that she tried something different with her 'release' from the bar after the stunt. She got Valerie to just straighten both her legs and drop head-first to the safety nets. Woah! That sure looked like fun!
Look ma, no hands! We left the island at about six in the evening and had McDonald's over at HarbourFront.
On our next visit to Sentosa, we have already planned to come equipped with fishing nets (mini ones lah!) and containers. We intend to fish in the waters at Siloso beach. Just for fun lah! We might just end up letting the fishes go free leh! Haha!

Around the Neighbourhood
|
|
Audio : Listen
View from the canal Took a walk around the neighbourhood with Valerie yesterday evening. The weather was cool and there was not much sun. This was both good and bad. Good because it was not too hot to enjoy a nice walk around the estate where we live. Bad because the lack of sun meant that pictures taken will not be nice.
Valerie was enjoying herself so much she floated! Anyway, we went to the river (Sungei Punggol) and had a good time exploring it and the areas where it intersects with a canal. The tide was low and we managed to take some pictures in the canal itself rather safely.
One of the water 'cascades' There are a few 'cascades' where the canal intersects the river. These provide a break from the otherwise monotonous look of the canal. Some people prefer calling these 'mere features of a longkang'. While making our way through the bushes and shrubs (to get down to the canal), we noticed many bicycles.
Many people come to this river to fish. They have to make their way, just like us, through the bushes and shrubs in order to get down to the river. I will definitely encourage anyone who has any intentions of coming here, to come with at least a companion. Not safe to venture here alone. Especially for the girls!
Valerie and I have decided that the next time we come, we will get Mummy and Lucas around. This time, we will also come prepared with bottles and nets to catch some longkang fish!

Bees are afraid of mosquitoes. This is because bees get poked first in a mosqui-bee confrontation.
According to the observation made, mosquitoes have their 'pokies' right in front of their heads and thus will be able to poke the bees before they even have time to turn their asses around to start stinging them! This observation was made by my son this morning on the way to school...haha! Now, if he could just channel some of these to his efforts in studies, that would be wonderful!

I also read from Dickson that he'd read (@#!$) from Cowboy Caleb that if we downloaded and installed Flock, we could get a registration for WordPress. Sounds interesting.

A short week

Woot! The beginning of a short work week! Thanks to the Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali holidays, we only have to work 3 days this week!
Many people have already made plans and applied to go on leave to make full use of this week's holidays. Taking Monday, Wednesday and Friday off, they will be able to get a whooping 9 days off work!! (Mr. Brown's article on TodayOnline provides a 'useful' formula to calculate this)
For me, it's going to be an uneventful week again - sprinkled with worrying thoughts of the impending exams, the revisions (or the lack of) and assignment deadlines. What the heck! Going to get my ass off and start completing the damn assignment this week.
No more cosy cubicles. All bright now. My chair in the office was 'shampooed' over the weekend. The notorious stains and odours are gone now. It looks almost like new, from a distance, except for the scratches on the plastic armrests. It still feels uncomfortable sitting on this to work though... it curves at awkward angles and places - making my back ache again! Nabei!
Over the weekend, the lamps above my cubicle were replaced as well... no more nice cosy feel around here anymore. It's all bright and nice, and it sucks big time!

Bloody Hot Sunday

Yup! It burned my skin like hell this morning when we were at Choa Chu Kang Christian Cemetary.
I thought it would rain today since it didn't yesterday but, well.. :(
The family usually goes to 'niam chek' at this time of the year. Literally 'niam chek' means to light candles.
Going around on a chartered bus (my MIL's) meant that a bigger group of the family can make the trip together - cheaper (FREE if MIL still refuses to accept the money). Getting to the few locations around Singapore could easily cost at least SGD80.00 per family, to and fro. Besides, it would have been totally skin torture to walk the distance from inside the cemetary to the main road to hail a cab!
Luckily this is over and done with! Till next year then! :-)

Moe's Learning Adventures

Audio : Listen
Still learning and remembering...
- Sitting on 'normal' office work chairs give you a freaking hell of a backache.
- At certain restaurants, you have to get the chilli sauce yourself even though you have waitresses 'serving' the food.
- Some people are spending SGD200+ a day on hotel rooms when there is no obvious reasons/occasions for doing so. (milasil, please enlighten me leh!)
- There is this certain breed of sales persons who go tidying up the displays hanging on the racks even though all you've done was to barely touch the item.
- heow is local slang for hell (as in What the heow!?!?) and heow is also a term used to describe
ladiespeople who empahsize too much on 'packaging' their looks. Yes, there IS a difference! These are two different words!
- I still do not know what that small kid was shouting in the children formula milk advertisement where the question was posed, "Which country was the first to discover chocolate?"
I have read somewhere that the Mayans were probably the earliest drinkers of chocolate drinks but I have no freaking idea where they are from!! :-)
- Much as I would like to feel good about getting original and legal downloads, seeing the SGD1.99 item for a song purchase from Soundbuzz still pisses me off.
- Oh, and the great old 'LEGAL' Napster and iTunes are NOT AVAILABLE IN MY REGION.
- Happy Tree Friends still kicks ass - no matter how many times you've seen the episode!
- On the average, food around the new office location is MUCH MORE expensive than those back in Raffles Place!

Bistro my foot!

Surfing By : Link

The cashier counter was very cramped - just like my circuit board! Had lunch at the Delifrance Bistro at Hougang Mall this afternoon. The food was not too fantastic.
I made a few observations during my short lunch there.
Here you will have write your orders on an order chit and then proceed to the cashier's to make the order and pay. There was only ONE lady at the CRAMPED cashier's counter. Beside which stands a cooler to hold and display the chocolate eclairs, Paris Breasts (!!), Chocolate Charlottes, etc.
Lady cashier takes the order from the person in front of me and very quickly a queue forms. After taking the order, she punches the items into the register and starts packing the eclairs (and such) into the boxes and plastic bags. Meanwhile, the queue grows and at the side, I can see a few other staff standing within the restaurant waiting to clean up the tables, serve the dishes - but mostly just chatting away.
Back at the cashier's, I have already waited about 10 minutes to make my order (that's long considering I was second in the queue). Finishing the person's order, she finally attended to me. For some reason, she had to use another register to enter the orders for 'eat-in' customers. At the same time, the person behind me started putting the pastries that she intended to buy on the cashier's counter top.
Seeing this, the cashier started keying in her order (back to the first register machine) while waiting for the credit card approval for my payment.
Finally, my order is processed and happily (actually, I feel more relieved), I went back to my table.
The food came and I requested for some chilli sauce. Guess what?!? The waitress/staff/stuck-up-dun-wanna-serve-me person pointed to a table where there were a few bottles of chilli sauce.
"There!", she said.
Nabei! What kind of a restaurant is this!?!?!? WTF! Order food still got to go get chilli sauce myself!
So, from what I can see, the only changes after their big renovation and renaming exercises are:
Previously | Currently | CAFE | BISTRO | Sign on VISA payment slip with pen. | Sign on VISA payment slip with pencil. | Self service all the way | Waitress serves food, BUT, you go get your own chilli sauce. |
What the heow!!! I will VERY MUCH try to avoid eating there in future... I prefer the Delifrance at Compass Point.
If you are from Delifrance and reading this... Can someone please get something done to the customer service process there? Everything's in a mess!
My suggestion would be to do away with the new way of doing things...which is creating a mess, and get back to the good old ways of CAFE style! :-)

Went Trekking on Sunday

Nearing the end of the trail. Stone and pebble track. On Sunday, we went trekking. We did a short one this time.
Started out at 0730hrs from MacRitchie Reservoir. We trekked along the Petai Trail and ended up at SICC along Upper Thomson Road. Quite a scenic sight, even with the drizzle going on all the time. This trail is surprisingly easy to complete, and I would recommend it for those who are starting to trek. EO was telling me that he is interested in bringing his son for a trek - this seems an easy one.
Along the trail, you will have boardwalks to provide comfortable walking conditions and only at the later part will you have to walk on gravel and other stuff (e.g. mud patches, puddles and such).
We did not do a long trek as Valerie had to prepare for exams which are due for this week. Did not want to tire her out.
Was it just me or are the anti-mozzie campaigns working? I did not get bitten by those dreaded mosquitoes yesterday morning - not even one bite! :-)
While surfing the Net recently, I came across this interesting site for avid wildlife and nature lovers in Singapore - WildSingapore.com.
Excerpt from Wildsingapore.com:
about wildsingapore.com
wildsingapore.com is just a website run by me, Ria.
I first started wildsingapore.com as a companion website to the Chek Jawa guidebook. To contain all the wonderful photos and information that I just couldn't squeeze into the guidebook.
Since then, it has grown to contain lots more of the wild places, wild activities and wild people that I have come across.
My hope is that wildsingapore.com can be a one-stop location for anyone interested in learning more about our wild places; and doing more for them.
The website features:
On the homepage: pdates on nature-oriented websites/blogs, new nature books and other publications, the latest volunteer opportunities. So, do give the site a click to find out more about the interesting 'wild' places in Singapore that you can check out!

Friday's gathering at Paulaner's was pretty interesting. Met up with BL at the pub and she let me in on some interesting pieces of news. The turnout was good, except for the guys from Geo-T, and the drinks were free! :)
Did not think I could stomach the beer, but after a while, I decided for some red wine instead. Did not get much of a chance to chat with a lot of people but I've had a good handful to talk to nonetheless.
BL introduced me to Phoebe and found out that she's the one taking care of our claims... hmm... 'threatened' her to make sure she handles Uncle moe's claims properly... hurhurhur!
Anyway, BL had to leave early and I was left standing awkwardly beside KK - with nothing much in common to talk about and him staying aloof. Ha! Luckily, Stefan was around to keep the moods up for me. He's a nice fellow.
Janet came around 1900hrs+ and went upstairs to look for me. Introduced her to some big, hairy German friends as well as Siew Chen, who was leaving Singapore for Germany on Sunday. Chatted a bit and left for dinner. Hahah! CZ actually agreed to me that dinner place would have been a better location as there would be better 'proper' food to eat! Too bad dude!
Dinner at Moonfish was (as usual) fantastic! Had our usual fix of the combo spaghetti and pizza. Went home early as Valerie had to go church early on Saturday morning. Got to pick her up from the in-law's place... sucks... :(

Since the start of the crackdown of illegal downloading and sharing of media files and software in Singapore, my wife has been warning me not to cross the line and do anything illegal.
With the recent jailing of the two seditious bloggers, she's gotten even more paranoid.

Wife: You have not done anything illegal, have you?
moe: Nope! Don't worry lah... worst case scenario, I get famous lor!
Wife: !@#!@#$$!@#$@$!@%$^%$%^%$&@$
Duh! Well, don't worry lah dear, I will not get into trouble with the law one leh! Kekekek! Besides, I have friends of many different races and religions. So, I don't think I will be risking my relationships with them by shooting my mouth offposting anything against their races or religions!
I reckon I will be rather safe and will not be in any trouble - at least not if anyone's pissed off about my stupid posts about worklife! :)
On the MP3 side, I have started downloading songs off the Soundbuzz site. Seems the only other option for me since iTunes and Napster are both "not available in my region". Duh! So, as you can see, I am going legal recently...

It is a wonder that I did not get fat after all these years! Hao lian right! Haha! I have a bad habit, and that is that I need to constantly munch on something when I am at work - I will feel very uneasy if I don't.
The stash is getting smaller now that I have moved to the new office. There is no readily accessible supermarkets, mini-marts, shop houses, etc. that are near the office. At the old place, getting it replenished was as easy as taking the lift downstairs to the MRT arcade and hitting the 7-11.
'Featured' here in the picture:
- Uncle Toby's Strawberry Yoghurt Topps Muesli Bars
For the breakfast urge. - Vicenzi Butter Puff Pastry
For the little afternoon tea-time delight. - Assorted Nissin Cup Noodles
For those times when I have to work the extra hours.
Am I here to work or what?!?!? Ha!

The Postman Rides Evil!
|
|
Surfing By : Link
Audio : Listen
Every time I see a postman doing his rounds in the estate, I will feel uneasy.
This feeling of uneasiness stemmed from a minor accident that happened to my daughter about 3 years+ back. That was during the time when we were still staying with my parents, while waiting for our new flat.
Valerie was on the way home from school when it happened. A postman, riding his scooter on the void deck of the blocks of HDB flats, rammed into her and in the process hurting her ear. I was in the office when I received the call from my wife. Rushing back home, I was relieved to find that the cuts were not deep and most of the others were just minor abrasions. Thank God!
The question on my mind regarding this whole incident is, "Why do postmen ride along the void decks of HDB flats?"
From investigations carried out by the postal company, the postman insisted that this made their job of delivering letters other posts easier. However, have they considered the consequences of an accident arising from their 'ease of work'? Although the supervisor for the postal delivery for my mum's estate has ensured us that they will make sure that similar incidents do not happen in future, we are still seeing many postmen doing this!
Now, if the similar thing were to happen to an elderly or frail person, what would have been the consequence? Isn't it time that they realise that they are risking other people's well-being for their own convenience?
Do you also see them riding around the void decks at your homes?

Saturday was a more productive day. Woke up and started cleaning the houseflat. My wife has kickboxing classes on Saturdays and I was next in the row to do the cleaning. No probs lah! Hah! Hopefully, the sweating bit helped to clear the week's pent up frustrations with work.
As some of you may know, I am at a point in my working life where I must make a decision of whether to stay and fight my way with the management, or to make the move and seek better placements outside of the shit-hole I've been in for the past 4-plus years.
I have been making a lot of noise about this 'issue' for a couple of blog posts now and I am glad that some of the people who have read them have responded to me - either via email or phone. Thank you people!
