Flock Browser
Flock Browser Developer Preview
Another jump-on-the-bandwagon thing again! I have just downloaded Flock to test-surf and it seems pretty fast and slick! Good one! I like the default clean and neat interface it has. The download seems a little larger than Mozilla's Firefox, but thankfully, it's not too 'bloated' up with rubbish.

I also read from Dickson that he'd read (@#!$) from Cowboy Caleb that if we downloaded and installed Flock, we could get a registration for WordPress. Sounds interesting.

To get more ideas on what Flock can do, please see here for a list of 13 things we can do with Flock (and how to do them).

Please Note:
Flock is currently in DEVELOPER PREVIEW status. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

A short week
Audio : Listen

Woot! The beginning of a short work week! Thanks to the Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali holidays, we only have to work 3 days this week!

Many people have already made plans and applied to go on leave to make full use of this week's holidays. Taking Monday, Wednesday and Friday off, they will be able to get a whooping 9 days off work!! (Mr. Brown's article on TodayOnline provides a 'useful' formula to calculate this)

For me, it's going to be an uneventful week again - sprinkled with worrying thoughts of the impending exams, the revisions (or the lack of) and assignment deadlines. What the heck! Going to get my ass off and start completing the damn assignment this week.

No more cosy little corner in the office...
No more cosy cubicles. All bright now.

My chair in the office was 'shampooed' over the weekend. The notorious stains and odours are gone now. It looks almost like new, from a distance, except for the scratches on the plastic armrests. It still feels uncomfortable sitting on this to work though... it curves at awkward angles and places - making my back ache again! Nabei!

Over the weekend, the lamps above my cubicle were replaced as well... no more nice cosy feel around here anymore. It's all bright and nice, and it sucks big time!

Bloody Hot Sunday
Sunday, October 30, 2005
Audio : Listen

Yup! It burned my skin like hell this morning when we were at Choa Chu Kang Christian Cemetary.

I thought it would rain today since it didn't yesterday but, well.. :(

The family usually goes to 'niam chek' at this time of the year. Literally 'niam chek' means to light candles.

Going around on a chartered bus (my MIL's) meant that a bigger group of the family can make the trip together - cheaper (FREE if MIL still refuses to accept the money). Getting to the few locations around Singapore could easily cost at least SGD80.00 per family, to and fro. Besides, it would have been totally skin torture to walk the distance from inside the cemetary to the main road to hail a cab!

Luckily this is over and done with! Till next year then! :-)

Moe's Learning Adventures
Thursday, October 27, 2005
Audio : Listen

Still learning and remembering...
  • Sitting on 'normal' office work chairs give you a freaking hell of a backache.

  • At certain restaurants, you have to get the chilli sauce yourself even though you have waitresses 'serving' the food.

  • Some people are spending SGD200+ a day on hotel rooms when there is no obvious reasons/occasions for doing so. (milasil, please enlighten me leh!)

  • There is this certain breed of sales persons who go tidying up the displays hanging on the racks even though all you've done was to barely touch the item.

  • heow is local slang for hell (as in What the heow!?!?) and heow is also a term used to describe ladiespeople who empahsize too much on 'packaging' their looks. Yes, there IS a difference! These are two different words!

  • I still do not know what that small kid was shouting in the children formula milk advertisement where the question was posed, "Which country was the first to discover chocolate?"

I have read somewhere that the Mayans were probably the earliest drinkers of chocolate drinks but I have no freaking idea where they are from!! :-)

  • Much as I would like to feel good about getting original and legal downloads, seeing the SGD1.99 item for a song purchase from Soundbuzz still pisses me off.

  • Oh, and the great old 'LEGAL' Napster and iTunes are NOT AVAILABLE IN MY REGION.

  • Happy Tree Friends still kicks ass - no matter how many times you've seen the episode!

  • On the average, food around the new office location is MUCH MORE expensive than those back in Raffles Place!

Bistro my foot!
Surfing By : Link
Audio : Listen

Cramped as my circuit board!
The cashier counter was very cramped - just like my circuit board!
Had lunch at the Delifrance Bistro at Hougang Mall this afternoon. The food was not too fantastic.

I made a few observations during my short lunch there.

Here you will have write your orders on an order chit and then proceed to the cashier's to make the order and pay. There was only ONE lady at the CRAMPED cashier's counter. Beside which stands a cooler to hold and display the chocolate eclairs, Paris Breasts (!!), Chocolate Charlottes, etc.

Lady cashier takes the order from the person in front of me and very quickly a queue forms. After taking the order, she punches the items into the register and starts packing the eclairs (and such) into the boxes and plastic bags. Meanwhile, the queue grows and at the side, I can see a few other staff standing within the restaurant waiting to clean up the tables, serve the dishes - but mostly just chatting away.

Back at the cashier's, I have already waited about 10 minutes to make my order (that's long considering I was second in the queue). Finishing the person's order, she finally attended to me. For some reason, she had to use another register to enter the orders for 'eat-in' customers. At the same time, the person behind me started putting the pastries that she intended to buy on the cashier's counter top.

Seeing this, the cashier started keying in her order (back to the first register machine) while waiting for the credit card approval for my payment.

Finally, my order is processed and happily (actually, I feel more relieved), I went back to my table.

The food came and I requested for some chilli sauce. Guess what?!? The waitress/staff/stuck-up-dun-wanna-serve-me person pointed to a table where there were a few bottles of chilli sauce.

"There!", she said.

Nabei! What kind of a restaurant is this!?!?!? WTF! Order food still got to go get chilli sauce myself!

So, from what I can see, the only changes after their big renovation and renaming exercises are:
PreviouslyCurrently
CAFEBISTRO
Sign on VISA payment slip with pen.Sign on VISA payment slip with pencil.
Self service all the wayWaitress serves food, BUT, you go get your own chilli sauce.

What the heow!!! I will VERY MUCH try to avoid eating there in future... I prefer the Delifrance at Compass Point.
If you are from Delifrance and reading this...
Can someone please get something done to the customer service process there? Everything's in a mess!

My suggestion would be to do away with the new way of doing things...which is creating a mess, and get back to the good old ways of CAFE style! :-)

Went Trekking on Sunday

Trekking at MacRitchie Reservoir Reserve
Nearing the end of the trail. Stone and pebble track.
On Sunday, we went trekking. We did a short one this time.

Started out at 0730hrs from MacRitchie Reservoir. We trekked along the Petai Trail and ended up at SICC along Upper Thomson Road. Quite a scenic sight, even with the drizzle going on all the time. This trail is surprisingly easy to complete, and I would recommend it for those who are starting to trek. EO was telling me that he is interested in bringing his son for a trek - this seems an easy one.

Along the trail, you will have boardwalks to provide comfortable walking conditions and only at the later part will you have to walk on gravel and other stuff (e.g. mud patches, puddles and such).

We did not do a long trek as Valerie had to prepare for exams which are due for this week. Did not want to tire her out.

Was it just me or are the anti-mozzie campaigns working? I did not get bitten by those dreaded mosquitoes yesterday morning - not even one bite! :-)

While surfing the Net recently, I came across this interesting site for avid wildlife and nature lovers in Singapore - WildSingapore.com.

Excerpt from Wildsingapore.com:
about wildsingapore.com

wildsingapore.com is just a website run by me, Ria.

I first started wildsingapore.com as a companion website to the Chek Jawa guidebook. To contain all the wonderful photos and information that I just couldn't squeeze into the guidebook.

Since then, it has grown to contain lots more of the wild places, wild activities and wild people that I have come across.

My hope is that wildsingapore.com can be a one-stop location for anyone interested in learning more about our wild places; and doing more for them.

The website features:

On the homepage: pdates on nature-oriented websites/blogs, new nature books and other publications, the latest volunteer opportunities.

So, do give the site a click to find out more about the interesting 'wild' places in Singapore that you can check out!

It was gone!!!

* POOF!! * KNNBCCBWTFWTH!!!!!

Now I'm stuck with this moronic-blue looking super-uncomfy bloody twit of a chair. Aarrggghh! And just look at the fucking stains on the cushion! What?!?! Ok, now everyone's accepted the fact that our beloved Herman Millers are gone now... erm, oh, I thought that they were gonna get NEW chairs for all?!?!?

Driven by the urge to eliminate these pest comments, I have turned on Word Verification for comments, so you guys/gals will have to type in the verification word you see to be able to post the comment.

Backlinks
I have also turned on BackLinks information for each of the blog posts. This will enable readers to see which other blogs are referencing the current post they are viewing! :)

Camera Buying Frenzy
Audio : Listen

Recently, the guys in the office are pretty into the digital camera websites. Reason? They are planning to get new digital cameras to replace their faulty/old ones.

The general interest is in compact cameras from Fujifilm, Casio and Panasonic.

This morning, the interest was placed on the S5600/S9500 series by Fujifilm. These two cameras seemed to be the best value for money range they could get their hands on - although they are both not exactly COMPACT.

Hmm...me?!? I'm still dreaming about my Konica Minolta 7D/5D DSLR.

Please do not click on the Listen to this article link yet! It still requires more screwing from me!

And the spaghetti was great...

Friday's gathering at Paulaner's was pretty interesting. Met up with BL at the pub and she let me in on some interesting pieces of news. The turnout was good, except for the guys from Geo-T, and the drinks were free! :)

Did not think I could stomach the beer, but after a while, I decided for some red wine instead. Did not get much of a chance to chat with a lot of people but I've had a good handful to talk to nonetheless.

BL introduced me to Phoebe and found out that she's the one taking care of our claims... hmm... 'threatened' her to make sure she handles Uncle moe's claims properly... hurhurhur!

Anyway, BL had to leave early and I was left standing awkwardly beside KK - with nothing much in common to talk about and him staying aloof. Ha! Luckily, Stefan was around to keep the moods up for me. He's a nice fellow.

Janet came around 1900hrs+ and went upstairs to look for me. Introduced her to some big, hairy German friends as well as Siew Chen, who was leaving Singapore for Germany on Sunday. Chatted a bit and left for dinner. Hahah! CZ actually agreed to me that dinner place would have been a better location as there would be better 'proper' food to eat! Too bad dude!

Dinner at Moonfish was (as usual) fantastic! Had our usual fix of the combo spaghetti and pizza. Went home early as Valerie had to go church early on Saturday morning. Got to pick her up from the in-law's place... sucks... :(

Next time then...

Going legal
Thursday, October 13, 2005
Audio : Listen

Since the start of the crackdown of illegal downloading and sharing of media files and software in Singapore, my wife has been warning me not to cross the line and do anything illegal.

With the recent jailing of the two seditious bloggers, she's gotten even more paranoid.

Mr. Ngeow speaking...
Wife: Hey, you better don't get yourself into any trouble with the law over your blog ok!

moe: ...

Wife: Don't sekali kena arrested over some stupid comments you made on your blog hor!?!?

moe: ...erm

** Wife giving me the suspicious look

Wife: You have not done anything illegal, have you?

moe: Nope! Don't worry lah... worst case scenario, I get famous lor!

Wife: !@#!@#$$!@#$@$!@%$^%$%^%$&@$

Duh! Well, don't worry lah dear, I will not get into trouble with the law one leh! Kekekek! Besides, I have friends of many different races and religions. So, I don't think I will be risking my relationships with them by shooting my mouth offposting anything against their races or religions!

I reckon I will be rather safe and will not be in any trouble - at least not if anyone's pissed off about my stupid posts about worklife! :)

On the MP3 side, I have started downloading songs off the Soundbuzz site. Seems the only other option for me since iTunes and Napster are both "not available in my region". Duh! So, as you can see, I am going legal recently...

At least for now. Hehe! *evil grin*

My not-so-secret Stash of Junk Food
Tuesday, October 11, 2005
Audio : Listen

My not-so-scret stash
My 'stash' of chomp-chomps
Hidden in my drawer, but known to quite a handful of people, is my small little stash of tidbits and other munchables.

It is a wonder that I did not get fat after all these years! Hao lian right! Haha! I have a bad habit, and that is that I need to constantly munch on something when I am at work - I will feel very uneasy if I don't.

The stash is getting smaller now that I have moved to the new office. There is no readily accessible supermarkets, mini-marts, shop houses, etc. that are near the office. At the old place, getting it replenished was as easy as taking the lift downstairs to the MRT arcade and hitting the 7-11.

'Featured' here in the picture:

  • Uncle Toby's Strawberry Yoghurt Topps Muesli Bars
    For the breakfast urge.

  • Vicenzi Butter Puff Pastry
For the little afternoon tea-time delight.

  • Assorted Nissin Cup Noodles
For those times when I have to work the extra hours.

Am I here to work or what?!?!? Ha!

The Postman Rides Evil!
Surfing By : Link
Audio : Listen

Every time I see a postman doing his rounds in the estate, I will feel uneasy.

This feeling of uneasiness stemmed from a minor accident that happened to my daughter about 3 years+ back. That was during the time when we were still staying with my parents, while waiting for our new flat.

Valerie was on the way home from school when it happened. A postman, riding his scooter on the void deck of the blocks of HDB flats, rammed into her and in the process hurting her ear. I was in the office when I received the call from my wife. Rushing back home, I was relieved to find that the cuts were not deep and most of the others were just minor abrasions. Thank God!

The question on my mind regarding this whole incident is, "Why do postmen ride along the void decks of HDB flats?"

From investigations carried out by the postal company, the postman insisted that this made their job of delivering letters other posts easier. However, have they considered the consequences of an accident arising from their 'ease of work'? Although the supervisor for the postal delivery for my mum's estate has ensured us that they will make sure that similar incidents do not happen in future, we are still seeing many postmen doing this!

Now, if the similar thing were to happen to an elderly or frail person, what would have been the consequence? Isn't it time that they realise that they are risking other people's well-being for their own convenience?

Do you also see them riding around the void decks at your homes?

Weekend relief
Sunday, October 09, 2005

Friday was off day for me. Nothing much happened. Stayed at home, slept a bit in the afternoon, too wasted to blog. Bah!

Saturday was a more productive day. Woke up and started cleaning the houseflat. My wife has kickboxing classes on Saturdays and I was next in the row to do the cleaning. No probs lah! Hah! Hopefully, the sweating bit helped to clear the week's pent up frustrations with work.

As some of you may know, I am at a point in my working life where I must make a decision of whether to stay and fight my way with the management, or to make the move and seek better placements outside of the shit-hole I've been in for the past 4-plus years.

I have been making a lot of noise about this 'issue' for a couple of blog posts now and I am glad that some of the people who have read them have responded to me - either via email or phone. Thank you people!

Ok, this is vain me 'photo-whoring' myself wearing my new pair of Swissflex Rainbows.

The tangerine sides sure made my face stand out in meetings! Hahah! Initially, I was not so used to the wider lens as the previous pair of eye-glasses I had was really 'petite' - ultra-small framed design, but have since gotten used to it.

I really appreciate the light weight of the Rainbow as it definitely takes a lot of pressure off your temples and nose region when wearing it!

Ok, enough whoring already!!!

It's always funny how your boss(es) keep having the impression that you are naive enough to believe the bullshit and empty promises that they sprout from their sai kang.

For example...

moe: ...yah.
boss: I think it should not be a problem for you to get it ready for presentation this Thursday...

* Today is Tuesday. *
