Quiz: How will you be defined in the dictionary?
|
|
Audio : Listen
Dickson has a link to an interesting quiz. It's called 'How will you be defined in the dictionary?'.
You provide a name, and it churns out a supposed definition of that word from the 'dictionary'. Quite a funny definition for fugs.
Yah, I wish I was constantly on a high! Hahaha!

Fernvale: Not so ulu afterall
|
|
Audio : Listen
The family participated in a Walk-a-Jog event on Sunday.
Valerie ran the whole distance and came in 31st overall. Janet started jogging only after a quarter of the way - after walking with me and Lucas. As for Lucas, he half ran, half walked in the beginning but started complaining of stomach pains and such, after Janet started off jogging. In the end, I had to carry him all the way to the end. We came in as numbers 182 and 183 with Janet at number 51.
Haha! The more important thing is that we got the family together on a sleepy Sunday morning and got ourselves some sweaty fun!
Anyway, the event also signified the commencement of construction works for the interim commercial centre, located just beside the Fernvale LRT station. This commercial centre is expected to be named Fernvale Point.
That, is good news to most Fernvale residents as the estates here have long been lacking in terms of amenities. During his address, Dr. Balaji mentioned that we will get a wet market, supermarket (people are guessing it's NTUC), ATMs, 4D betting centre, a food court (口福 - Koufu), and more! Heehee! With the completion of these, Fernvale will cease to be branded 'ulu'!!
CNA has a piece on this too.

Cotton-tongued
|
|
Audio : Listen
Hmm, my taste buds seem to have gone hay-wired recently. WTF!
Ever since the injection that I took last Sunday for an allergy reaction, my tongue has been feeling cottony and swollen. Things I eat taste like paper and it does not seem to be getting any better.
To make things worse, the cough mixture's smell seem to have also found a permanent lodging in my brain. I keep 'smelling' it even when I have stopped taking the mixture. Wah like 'kee siao' leh!
Maybe I should go get my brains scanned and have some psychological tests done!
Have a nice weekend!

Singapore: Spaceport 2009
|
|
Audio : Listen
Singapore is going to have a spaceport come 2009?!
Wow?! And how fantastic is that?
The whole idea of space travel (as a tourist of course!) is a reality after all, and that reality is nearer to home than you thought. The only thing setting you away from that is probably just a couple of hundred thousand bucks.
So, the new Tourism Board slogan might read...
"Come to Singapore and get your ass blasted off this planet!"
Read more here:
The refrigerator seems cranky today. When Janet opened its doors this morning, the damn thing was 'sweating' inside! Sucks! Seems like it is almost time to call in the technicians. Jeez!
Hopefully, the fruits and meats have not turned bad because of this!

Strawberry Jam
|
|
Audio : Listen
Back in the office after a rather weekend that seemed to pass by real quick (isn't it the same week-in week-out?)
Feeling drowsy as I have been put on anti-histamines to treat the itch reaction from an allergy (to something, no idea what?!?!) I have been having on my arms for a week plus now. Another cause for the drowsiness is the cough syrup that I am also having...zzzzzzzz! Duh!
WTF! Guess I will have to pull through the day on caffeine!! Nah!! Too much of that stuff will harm you man! Go easy on the coffee everyone!
Now, the coffee should go well with the buns that I have brought this morning! They have been applied with homemade strawberry jam that was freshly cooked last night!!! Yummy!
The jam is also very simple to make!
HOMEMADE STRAWBERRY JAM- Strawberries - to amount required.
- Honey - add to taste
- Raw Sugar - add to taste (not required if the honey added is sufficiently sweet for you).
- Lemon - add to taste
Steps to cook- Boil and simmer the strawberries in a little amount of water. Stir continuously to break down the pieces of strawberries.
- Squeeze a lemon and pour about 1/2 to 3/4 of the juice in (to taste).
- Add the honey. Continue stirring to prevent burning.
- Add raw sugar (if you prefer). Continue stirring to prevent burning.
- Bring to boil and let it cool before storing in the refrigerator.
There you have it! Very simple way to make strawberry jam yourself!!! Oh and please note that since we did not add preservatives, this jam is probably going to last you a week or so before turning bad.
Just started on another Stephen King book today. It is titled "The Long Walk". I have only started the first page and therefore can not make any comments. It is good that now, I have a source for a 'regular' supply of King's books.
My sister-in-law's younger sister is also a fan of his. She has in her collection quite a handful of his books and since they have been lying on the bookshelf collecting dust, I decided to borrow them. Saves me the trips to the library! Hahah!

Brand Loyalty Memberships
|
|
Audio : Listen
Most ladies will know that if you buy enough of a particular brand of cosmetics/skincare products, you will be eligible for membership to its 'exclusive' members only club, or Loyalty Memberships.
These 'clubs' usually give free gifts to customers who have accumulated a certain amount of purchases, or allows members to buy products at discounted prices. The free gifts can vary from handbags to skincare products, to cosmetics and vouchers. Pretty attractive, if you asked any lady.
So, what's my problem point? Well, the membership (like any other memberships) need to be renewed upon expiry. To do so, you will be required to make enough purchases during a membership period. This is fine, except that for certain companies, they require you to make purchases at the counters/outlets where you first applied for membership.
That is to say, if I got my membership at Tangs Shopping Centre, I will have to return to the counter there to make future purchases in order for my purchase points to be recorded to my membership account. Making purchases at another (Takashimaya, for example) shopping centre or outlet will not add to my points!
There may be some administrative reason behind this but to me, it is ridiculous for the customer!
Imagine this.
You are shopping in Jurong Point and a promoter comes up to you introducing a new moisturizer from your favourite brand. You like it very much. You are a member of the loyalty club. You want to earn points. So you buy the product to earn points...WAIT!!!
WAIT, WAIT, WAIT!!!
You can't buy from the promoter! No no!!! You will have to go from Jurong Point down to Orchard to buy that bottle of moisturizer!!! Why??? Simply because your 'home' counter is there in Takashimaya!!! Remember? You applied for membership and got it approved from there? Remember?!?!?
HAHAHAHAH!
Now that sounded stupid right? Go think about it!
(Maybe I am just a selfish and ignorant snob of a typical customer. Just maybe.)

Roses are red
|
|
Audio : Listen
There you go! Valentine's over and done with! How was your Valentine's Day?
Sent some flowers to my wife for Valentine's. This year, I played cheat and ordered a bouquet of red (passionate mah!) roses from the Internet. Janet complained that she wanted me to buy from any florist and to carry it home to her. My reply?
"Excuse me, your hubby now working in ulu place lah, where got nice and decent florist?!? Maybe some aunties in the wet market around there might sell some, but I am afraid they will wrap the roses up with newspaper leh!"
Hahahah!
Anyway, we made a pact that next year, we will not spend money on flowers. Instead, we will 'invest' the money on some sinful and expensive Godiva chocolates! Yummy!

The new Maya Hee Maya Ha
|

Audio : Listen
OK.
Now, think irritating. Ready? Start singing in your cutest voice.
...Schni Schna Schnappi Schnappi Schnappi Schnapp Schni Schna Schnappi Schnappi Schnappi Schnapp...
My cousin's wife, who is a teacher, told me recently that her class of students have been singing a rather annoying (in her opinion) German song. Hahaha!
So, step aside 'Dragostea din tei'maya hee maya ha, Schnappi's in da house!!! Heheheheh!
Schnappi - Das kleine krokodil (Schnappi - The Small Crocodile) is actually a rather simple and VERY catchy children's song. The first time I heard the song was from the local TV, in an advertisement for a compilation CD. In my opinion, it's nice to hear it sometimes, but not when you get a class of kids going on and on with the chorus.
My kids like to 'sing' along with the CD (ok, I bought the CD eventually) even though they know 'nuts' a single word of German. They end up 'echoing' the song. Now, that's VERY IRRITATING!!
Just imagine...
CD Player: Ich bin Schnappi, das kleine Krokodil. Kids (in punishing unison): KROKODIL!!!

IE 7.0 Preview Beta 2
|
|
Audio : Listen
Screenshot of IE 7.0 Preview Beta 2 Late last week, I downloaded the Beta 2 version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7.0 Preview. Fresh off the download, it installs without a hitch. Nice.
Quick Tabs - A new feature in IE 7.0 The interface is suspiciously FireFoxy, and so are a lot of the keyboard controls. From the first screen capture, you can see arrows pointing to various parts of the browser (click on image for bigger version) which I will attempt to bring you around.
- #1 - Tabbed Browsing
Finally, tabbed browsing comes to IE. Haha! It is finally here! Maybe it's just me, or Firefox (FF) has a more intuitive UI for the tabs. The tabs can be closed by clicking the 'X' at the right hand corner in FF, but in IE, you had to move the cursor to the individual tabs to click on the 'X'.
- #2 - Feeds Support
RSS feeds, and others, are VERY common around websites nowadays. It would be stupid if IE missed out all the fun!
- #3 - Page Magnification
Sometimes, you just want to be able to magnify the current page's contents PRONTO! This magnification/zooming function is conveniently placed at the bottom right corner of the browser. Cool!
- #4 - Separate Navigation Buttons
And we thought the navigation buttons (Back, Forward, Refresh, Stop and Home) would never be separated?!?! They are now!
In this version, the Back and Forward buttons are separated from the Stop and Refresh ones by the Address Bar. Not too used to this layout at first but... it's ok lah!
- #5 - Tabbed Browsing Part 2
The new tabs are created by clicking on this 'mini-tab'. Just the same as with FF, Ctrl+T does the same thing!
Something that I really liked about this implementation of IE is its 'Quick Tabs' function (see second picture). Nice and useful! You can activate it by clicking on a button and a screen of ALL your tabs will be shown. Click on the tab you want to concentrate on and it will be 'brought to the front'!
Woah! I can't wait for the final version to be released! Hopefully, it will not be another bug ridden release (yet) again!
This is NOT a review of MSIE 7.0 Preview Beta 2. It is just a personal view of what I think of the beta release.

Chingay
|
|
Audio : Listen
Just an idea of how packed the place was Once a year, the Chingay Parade takes place in Orchard Road.
It attracts tourists and locals alike. Everyone goes down to Orchard to catch on the festive feel. Usually, we would rather stay at home and watch the event from the comfort of our living room, but this year, we decided to hit 'ground zero' and head for Orchard.
Seasoned 'event chasers'
As can be expected, the place was packed (see topmost photo). And being 'seasoned' event 'chasers' as we were, we had our food packed from the foodcourt at nearby Takashimaya Shopping Centre. At around 1925hrs, it rained a bit - forcing the people to dash for shelter. Our spot was just outside Wisma Atria and so, finding shelter was no issue.
After the rain, I decided not to take anymore photos and keep my camera instead. Better play safe lah! Heheh! We left the place just before 2100hrs to avoid the 'big squeeze' on the MRT.
As promised to aMie,

On a Maple Tree

Surfing By : Link
Audio : Listen
Newbie under training Haha! Finally, after nine years!! Yup! It's been that long since I last installed and played a game on my computer! The last was Command and Conquer.
On Saturday, I installed a MMORPG game called MapleStory. After wrangling for some time with the setup (it seems you must go to the Southeast Asia site to download the installation file - if you do not want problems connecting to the game servers), I managed to get the game going. The game characters were 'cutesy' little cartoons that looked very much like something straight out of some Japanese anime. Cute!
Ok, since I am a total newbie in this, I shall not comment too much into how good this game really is. But it does seem interesting with the missions and quests!Chingay pretty much sucked if you watched it away from the 'grand stand'.
Better off watching it in comfort of your home, right in front of your television! So, unless you can reach the venue early and are prepared to wait...

The world had teeth
|
|
Audio : Listen
Just started reading (another) of Stephen King's books - The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. By the third day, I have chomped up sixty pages of it. Not too bad considering I only read when on the bus while travelling between my home and workplace.
A simple, short sentence caught my attention. It said quite simply, "The world had teeth and it could bite you with them anytime it wanted."
How true...! *Shudders* Ha!
As is usually the case, when things go wrong, they usually go awfully wrong. Not just a bit, but a hell of a whole lot wrong! Fuck! That's just the way it is with life and the big bad world out there. No, I have not come face on with any difficulties (yet), but it's just that this little sentence made me stop and give a thought to my life so far.
IT BITES. It really does. And in more ways than one could ever imagine. The sudden demise of someone close, the accidents, the occasional idiot who comes along and screws up your life... IT REALLY BITES - when you least expect it to. There is no timeline or schedule that it follows, the world hits at you as and when it wants to.
How much have you been bitten by this world recently?
Can you do anything about this?
Given time, people become accustomed to the 'bites'. As the experience grew with each bite, you would become better prepared for the next (no matter what it may be). Some people choose to be numb about this.
"Just endure the bites and it will be over."
To The World with Teeth,
Bite me asshole and I'll show you how thick my hide is.
To ardent Stephen King fans and all,
I used the sentence here as a reflection of my personal feelings and thoughts (and bullshit). It is definitely not an attempt to explain how SK wanted it to be meant in the book!
Besides, I have yet to finish reading it!!! Haha!
Ok, enough of a whole damn load of BULL and CRAP!!! Hurhurhur!P/S: I really think the world has teeth... just last week, it bit a BIG BIG hole in my wallet when it brought about this thing called "Chinese New Year".
